A Unique Identifier for Children

Positive News for Joining Up Support for Children, Young People and Families

We were so pleased to see one of our recommendations from our Fair Education Priorities - a unique identifier for children - appear in the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill. Following investment in the Early Years Pupil Premium in the Plan for Change, this is our second recommendation to become a reality. This is a significant step toward having the critical data we need to better understand the needs of children and young people and ensure that no child falls through the cracks.

But at the Fair Education Alliance, we believe this initiative is just the beginning. To truly maximise its impact, we must also invest in:

  • A National Children's Wellbeing Measurement Programme – Providing richer, more nuanced data to help us identify and address the challenges children face. The #OurWellbeingOurVoice campaign is bringing organisations together to champion this including BeeWell, The Children's Society, and Pro Bono Economics.

  • Common Outcomes Across Public Services – By aligning outcomes across services, we can ensure that data isn't just collected, but used effectively to drive action at the local level. We applaud Elaine Fulton for her work in this area.

We hope that the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill and the upcoming Spring Forecast will consider these additional priorities. Together, they can create a framework that empowers local areas to work together, providing every child with the support they deserve.

Let’s continue to collaborate and build a brighter, more equitable future for all young people.
